The King County Nurses Association (KCNA) is a professional association of registered nurses, established in 1903 as the King County Graduate Nurses Association and renamed in 1951. It is affiliated on the state and national levels with the Washington State Nurses Association and the American Nurses Association. While the Washington State Nurses Association, of which KCNA is affiliated, functions as both a professional association and a union that collectively bargains for its members, KCNA functions primarily as a professional association that engages in advocacy work. KCNA also maintains a registry of its members and makes referrals to hospitals in need of nursing staff and provides continuing education opportunities for its members, collaborates with other health organizations in King County, and is active in lobbying activities.

Scope and Content: The 002 accession of the King County Nurses Association records spans the years 1907-1979 and includes office files of the organization, including correspondence and financial records; meeting minutes, correspondence, reports, and other records of various KCNA committees; records documenting KCNA member involvement in Washington State Nurses Association program planning; press releases and newsletters of the organization; and reference files on nursing and nursing education.

Processing Info: The records were rehoused and inventoried by LAW Volunteer JoAnn Keenan in Fall 2019. Abbey Maynard, 2020 NWA Archivist in Residence, reviewed and updated the inventory in Winter 2020. Crystal Rodgers, LAW Processing Archivist, updated box and folder numbering on the physical files and updated the EAD finding aid for the 002 accession with the completed inventory and completed preservation photocopies for a small subset of materials originally printed on thermofax paper.

Processing Info: Processed by Emma Sommerseth, Elaine Kim, Haiyan Wang, and Crystal Rodgers in 2018-2019.

Students completed the initial rehousing and inventorying of the collection. Processing Archivist Crystal Rodgers addressed security concerns as well as preservation issues identified by the students, enhanced folder titles as needed, developed and implemented a proposed intellectual and physical arrangement of the collection, and updated the archival finding aid which previously contained only a minimally described PDF inventory.

Redactions and Discards: CERP worksheets in SERIES 9 contained social security numbers. Due to volume, only a sampling of these worksheets were kept and redacted, discarding the originals. Personnel sign-in sheets and daily logs of hours worked were discarded; however program and meeting attendance sign-in sheets were kept. Records in the Financial Records series were weeded extensively, discarding invoices and itemized receipts for individual purchases and parking vouchers due to low research value and/or bank account information. Any records in this series that demonstrated other organizational activity related to financial decisions were maintained.
