Historical Note

John H. Nicklin was an Oregon pioneer who journeyed across the Oregon Trail in 1851 from Iowa. He settled on the Salt Creek, about 60 miles from Portland and 35 miles off the Pacific coast. Nicklin received 640 acres from the government in Oregon to cultivate for the next four years.

Content Description

The papers of John H. Nicklin comprise a single letter written on February 25, 1851 to his brother. The letter documents John Nicklin's journey across the Oregon Trail and the conditions found in Oregon. The letter goes into detail about the agriculture productivity and crops he found in Oregon. The letter is eight typed pages.
