Historical Note
In 1910 two and one-half million acres of forest burned in Montana and
Northern Idaho, alerting forest managers to the need for systematic fire
protection. In 1911, the Northern Montana Forestry Association was organized by
private forest landowners to provide fire protection and forest preservation
for the forests of Montana, particularly in Flathead, Lake, Lincoln, and
Sanders counties. The Association located their main office in Kalispell, and
the first president was G. W Millett. Albert E. Boorman was secretary-treasurer
and chief fire warden from 1911 to 1945; his son, Maurice E. Boorman, took over
those offices the following year. The association charged members fees based on
the acreage of timbered land that was under Northern Montana Forestry
Association fire protection. The first assessment to the members was one-half
cent an acre. They used the money for organizing and equipping fire suppression
crews, fire detection, lookouts, and fire guards. Over the years, the original
purpose expanded to include protection of the private forestlands from loss by
disease and other causes. Summer fire crews, when not suppressing fires,
performed associated duties such as road maintenance and brush clearing.
Members included numerous lumber companies, private landowners, and large
corporations like the Anaconda Company and the Northern Pacific Railroad. The
association worked cooperatively with the U. S. Forest Service, Montana state
agencies, and private timber companies for 59 years, and eventually provided
fire protection for over one million acres and several thousand landowners.
In 1969 the Montana State Forestry Department took over the fire
control duties of the Association and by June 1970, the Association was out of
the fire fighting business. The Northern Montana Forestry Association remained
incorporated and provided annual scholarships through the School of Forestry at
the University of Montana in order to further the education of forestry
students. In May 1990, the Board of Directors voted to discontinue the Northern
Montana Forestry Association; the balance of their funds went to the Blackfoot
Forest Protective Association.

This Series contains income tax statements, ledger accounts,
payroll and wage scale information, and trial balance statements for the
association. These provide information on members served, pay rates, prices for
equipment and vehicles, employee names, telephone locations, and employee time
records. There are additional financial notes and reports from the Northern
Montana Forestry Association treasurer on the backs of several of the posters
in Series XVI: Memorabilia.
The Series is arranged alphabetically by information category,
then chronologically.
Series VI: Reports of the Northern Montana
Forestry Association , 1911-1968
10 linear feet
This Series contains reports generated by the association,
including annual, auditors committee, fire, daily service, time, and weather.
Fire Reports include initial fire report from lookouts, fire diaries, and
accounts of fire activities. Weather reports include fire weather forecasts,
weather bulletins, correspondence about weather, precipitation diagrams, and
monthly summaries; the USDA is the source of some of the weather data. It also
contains the reports of the Chief Fire Warden. Reports titled "Clarke-McNary"
refer to fire protection in the national forests. One folder labeled "fire
lookouts" gives the names and locations of stations and of the men staffing
them.
Materials arranged alphabetically by report type, then
chronologically.
Series VII: Northern Montana Forestry
Association Boundaries and Acreage , 1918-1940
Approx. 80 maps
This Series contains a number of US Forest Service maps of Montana
with hand-drawn annotations that show lands serviced by the association. There
are statements and other notes attached to each map. Some early maps also show
locations of smokechaser stations and fire lookouts.
Series X: Publications of Other Entities
, 1910-1970
1.5 linear feet
This Series consists of clippings and publications produced by
national and regional forestry organizations, including the Western Wood

This Series consists of a 1970 American Legion and a 1991 Boy
Scouts of America awards. There is also one folder of posters, most of which
were produced by the Forest Service. These offer interesting examples of the
public relations end of forest fire management, particularly in connection with
the World War II domestic effort. There are also numerous treasurer's notes and
reports for the Northern Montana Forestry Association on the backs of several
of the posters.
Arranged chronologically.
