Historical NoteReturn to Top

Commerce instruction was offered at Oregon State University from the time of its founding in 1868. A Department of Commerce was established at OSU in 1900 and the School of Commerce was formed as a professional school in 1908. However, the School of Commerce was transferred to the University of Oregon in 1932 as part of the consolidation of academic programs at the campuses of the Oregon State System of Higher Education. A business administration degree was restored at Oregon State in 1943 and a School of Business and Technology was established in 1947. In 1983, the name of the school was changed to the College of Business.

The Family Business Program was founded at Oregon State University in 1985 and was renamed the Austin Family Business Program in 1994 to honor endowment of the program by Ken and Joan Austin. The program fosters healthy family businesses through innovative tools and hands-on learning oppportunities.

Ken Austin graduated from Oregon State College in 1954 with a degree in industrial administration and later founded the prominent dental equipment company A-dec with his wife, Joan, in Newberg, Oregon. He was also selected as the first Benny Beaver mascot in spring 1952.

Patricia A. Frishkoff was a faculty member in the College of Business from 1978 to her retirement in 2002, and also the founding director of what came to be known as the Austin Family Business Program.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The College of Business Videotapes are organized into three series and consist primarily of VHS tapes but also include a smaller quantity of Betacam SP, DVCPro and Umatic tapes, as well as 1-inch Type C open reel tapes and a small quantity of born digital records.

The bulk of the collection is described in Series 1, which focuses on the activities of the Austin Family Business Program. Included in that series are recordings of multiple awards ceremonies and other gatherings - including lectures, panel discussions and conferences - that were sponsored by the program. The series also features promotional videos created to boost the profile of the program and to highlight the successes of specific family businesses across Oregon. Likewise incorporated into the series are an assortment of resource materials collected by the program that focus on particular aspects of establishing and growing a family business. Nine PowerPoint presentations created for use at a 2004 program retreat are also a component of the series. These PowerPoint files have been migrated off of physical media and are available in the SCARC reading room or upon patron request.

Series 2 consists of recorded class lectures given in 1997, 1998 and 2000 by OSU Business professor Pat Frishkoff as a component of Family Business Management (BA 463/563), a distance education course. Series 3 is comprised of assorted recordings collected by the College of Business including dubs of films produced by Alberta Agriculture and advertisements for Columbia Sportswear and Widmer Brothers Brewing.

All of the VHS tapes described in this collection are available for patron viewing within the SCARC reading room. With the exception of the PowerPoint files referenced above, all other materials in the collection require migration to a digital format prior to patron use and are not immediately available.
