Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Charles Mason MacDougall earned an Ed.D degree from Oregon State College in 1958, with a major in Education and minors in Industrial Arts (Industrial Education) and Fine Arts. His dissertation was titled Methods and Materials for Teaching Photography in the Secondary Schools. Rice was enrolled at OSC for the summer terms of 1926, 1943, and 1955; spring term of 1945; the full academic year of 1946-1947; and the spring term of 1954. He was an instructor in the Art Department during the 1946-1947 year.

Rice was born on April 28, 1898 in Snohomish, Washington, and died in Seattle in 1993. He had an early interest in photography and the industrial arts and began his teaching career in 1921 in the elementary and secondary schools of Everett, Washington. During this time he earned a BA in Fine Arts (1936) and a Masters in Education (1939) from Washington State College. Rice was an Associate Professor of Industrial Arts at Western Washington State College (now Western Washington University) from 1941 until his retirement in 1965.

The Charles M. Rice Papers consist of an autobiographical volume, Fifty Years in Industrial Education, prepared by Rice in 1977. The volume includes photocopies of correspondence, certificates, newsclippings, student records; duplicate photographs; lists of publications and courses that he taught; and other materials documenting Rice's education and career in industrial education in the Everett, Washington, Public Schools and at Western Washington State College. The Rice Papers also include a resume (biographical sketch) for him.

Custodial History

The materials were donated to the Kerr Library in 1979 and transferred to the Archives at that time.
