Everett H. Heacock spent two years as a student at Friends Pacific Academy (1902-03) and at Pacific College (1903-04), now George Fox University, Newberg, Oregon. His daughter, Erma Virginia Heacock Helm, was a student at Pacific University and the parent of an alumna. The long-time family association with the college and the Friends Church inspired Mr. Heacock's endowment for the construction of a new college dining room--the Heacock Commons--in 1965. Virginia Helm was active in her church and community, particularly in the Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU). She was a life-long member of Reedwood Friends Church, Portland. After retirement Mrs. Helm and her husband, Eldon, served as overseas missionaries in Guatemala, Kenya, Botswana, Dominican Republic, and Haiti. Mrs. Helm saved her own and her father's collection of memorabilia to contribute to this collection which was donated by her daughter.
This collection, donated by a father and daughter who were closely associated with the college, comprises personal correspondence, photographs, clippings and brochures pertaining to George Fox College and its predecessor, Pacific College, Newberg, Oregon. Some documents relate to Newberg public schools, but most--in the form of graduation programs, dedication statements, brochures, photographs, Newberg Graphic clippings, The Crescent (student newspaper) clippings--are about Pacific College events and the building of Heacock Commons. The collection also includes a Pacific College fabric neckerchief with the hand-printed letter "P" in one corner, a copy of Mr. Heacock's dedication of Heacock Commons address, a 1974 letter from Levi Pennington to the Helms, and the printed obituary of Virginia Heacock Helm.
