The Townsend Star was a weekly community newspaper that was established in in Broadwater County in 1897 by M. W. Hatch. During the Montana territorial centennial in 1964, the newspaper began publishing a series of columns specifically pertaining to the history of Broadwater County and its settlement. These clippings were either photocopied and assembled by Montana State Library personnel or by the donors.

Scrapbooks containing photocopied newspaper clippings pertaining to the history of Broadwater County and Townsend, Montana were loaned to the Montana State University Library by Mrs. Roy J. McKeehan of Helena, Montana and Ms. Grace Hollaway of Townsend, Montana in several installments between 1965 and 1972.
