Historical NoteReturn to Top

During the Great Depression the government created a series of programs to put writers and artists back to work. The Workers' Progress Administration was one such program, which focused mostly on regional writings and art styles. One WPA project here in Utah was to gather more information about the Mormon pioneers. (This project was later continued by the Utah Writers' Project.) Much of the material gathered by this project eventually was transferred to the Utah State Historical Society and the Cache Valley Historical Society.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The materials included in the Cache County Politics: Notes and Papers consist of 2 books and 3 folders. It is a small collection mainly concerned with the early history of Cache Valley. Much of the material in this collection was initially gathered as part of a WPA project and later the Utah Writers' Project during the 1930's. Other material was compiled in the 1950's by local members of the Cache Valley Historical Society. Book 1 contains notes abstracted by Ray Briscoe in 1955. Book 2 was prepared under the direction of USU History Professor S. George Ellsworth in 1956, and has material by Ray Briscoe and Gerald Hansen. All 3 folders were compiled by Merlin R. Hovey in 1956. Hovey was the Secretary-Manager of the local Chamber of Commerce.
