Historical NoteReturn to Top

Correspondence and extension courses were officially begun at the University of Utah in 1893 in order to provide courses for individuals unable to attend regular classes on campus. A Department of Extension Work was formed at the University of Utah in 1911 and in 1916 was reorganized into a distinct school at the University called the "Extension Division." In 1964 the Extension Division was renamed the Division of Continuing Education. The Division of Continuing Education became the current Academic Outreach and Continuing Education in 2000.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

This collection consists of sixteen binders of Extension Division material including course materials, class schedules, bulletins, publicity and promotional material, and advertisements for division-sponsored lectures, art exhibits, film presentations, and live performances. One of the binders, which contains material dated from the academic year 1912-1913 to 1949-1950 (though a question mark had been placed near the 1912-1913 date prior to the material's transfer to archives), consists of course announcements and descriptions. A second binder is comprised of mostly undated brochures for correspondence study courses. The remaining fourteen binders range in date from the academic year 1928-1929 to 1943-1944 with a gap for 1941-1942 and 1942-1943. These binders are generally divided into sections covering extension classes; correspondence study courses; special events such as lectures, performances, and art exhibits; and miscellaneous topics.
