Historical NoteReturn to Top

Prior to the construction of Kamola Hall in 1911, the Washington State Normal School (presently Central Washington University) managed and operated a women’s dormitory off-campus in downtown Ellensburg, Washington, that housed fifty female students. With the completion of Kamola Hall, women students were relocated on campus as male students rented rooms in private residences throughout the town of Ellensburg.

The ledger in this collection documents dormitory expenditures, vouchers, and student and faculty payments for room and board at Washington State Normal School. Included in the earliest dated ledger (1899-1905) is a written complaint from Mary A. Grupe stating she was overcharged for rent in June of 1905 while serving as an instructor at the Normal School.

Historical BackgroundReturn to Top

Central Washington University began as the Washington State Normal School in 1891. In 1937, the school was rechristened the Central Washington College of Education. In 1961, the school became Central Washington State College and, finally, in 1977, Central Washington University.
