Samuel Bateman was born on 1 July 1832 in Manchester, England. He served as bodyguard for LDS Church president, John Taylor, while he was in hiding for polygamy. Bateman served in that capacity until Taylor's death in 1887. Bateman served some jail time (1888-1889) himself for practicing polygamy.

The Samuel Bateman diary excerpts (1886-1907) were kept while Bateman served as bodyguard to LDS Church president, John Taylor. Bateman records daily activities as Taylor is forced to go into hiding during the later years of his life for practicing polygamy. The diary also contains some letter excerpts from Bateman's wife, Marinda, as well as a short biography.
