William E. Walsh (1903-1975) was born in Oswego, New York and educated at Willamette University in Oregon. He became an attorney and then served as a senator in the Oregon legislator (Republican) from the 8th district, 1941-1952, and as president of the state senate from 1949-1950. He also served as president of the State Board of Higher education. He was involved in many Oregon political campaigns and was chairman of the Nelson Rockefeller Presidential primary campaign committee in Oregon. He was also a member of the Board of Trustees of Willamette University and a member of the Board of Governors of the Oregon State Bar. Walsh also founded the radio station KWRP, in Coquille, Oregon, in 1949.
The collection contains correspondence and files related to Oregon political campaigns, including the campaigns of Julius L. Meier, Mark Hatfield and Wayne L. Morse, and Walsh's legislative correspondence files, documents and bills, committee and commission records, and Columbia Valley Authority files.
The Political File series (1930-1968) consists of correspondence and documents relating to Oregon politics, including the Julius Meier - Phil Metschan, Jr race in 1930, campaigns for the presidency of the State Senate, the Paul Patterson for Governor Committee, the Mark Hatfield for Secretary of State Committee, and campaign material on James W. Mott, Joe E. Dunn, and Earl Snell.
Among the nearly 1,000 letters the major correspondents are: Ralph H. Cake, Harris Ellsworth, Mark Hatfield, Phillip Hitchcock, Jack Lynch, Thomas R. Mahoney, Wayne L. Morse, Paul L. Patterson, Dean H. Walker.
The Legislative Correspondence and Documents series (1943-1963) contains about 700 letters to and from persons and organizations interested in specific legislation.
The State Legislature Correspondence and Documents series (1949; 1951) includes letters to and from persons and organizations interested in specific legislation, or bills, and also bill files and documents arranged by bill subject and number (for the 1951 session only).
The Records of Committees and Commissions series include documents, research, minutes and notes for the Interim Committee on Workmen's Compensation (1943-1944), Interim Committee on Aeronautics (1949-1951), Interim Committee on State Government Administration (1950), State Emergency Board (1950), Statute Revision Council (1950-1952), and the Interim Committee on Game Management (1951).
The Columbia Valley Authority (CVA) series includes documents and correspondence on the proposed CVA project, 1949-1950.
There is also a file on the Republican National Convention of 1952, at which Walsh was a member of the Credentials Committee.
