Historical NoteReturn to Top
Frances Fuller Victor (1826-1902) was an Oregon historian and author. She was born in Oneida County, New York and moved to Ohio with her family when she was in her teens. She and her sister Metta returned to New York in 1848 to pursue literary careers, publishing poetry and associating with other writers including Rufus Wilmot Griswold. After she married her second husband, Henry Clay Victor, in 1862, she moved with him to San Francisco and then to Oregon.
After moving to Oregon in 1865, Victor began writing book-length regional histories focusing on the northwest. She also wrote articles about women's rights; Abigail Scott Duniway's The New Northwest was among the publications to which she contributed. When her husband was killed in a ship wreck in 1875 writing became her main means of support; she soon became one of the principal authors of Hubert Howe Bancroft's multi-volume history of California and the west, accepting a 10-year contract requiring her to turn over all her writings and research to the historian. She contributed major portions of the work, although Bancroft published the entire thing under his own name. Victor returned to Oregon after her contract expired and continued to support herself with her writing; she died in Portland in 1902.

In the letter, Victor thanks Gale for ordering a book of poems written by Victor, and asks if Gale belongs to a ladies' club or society that might want to purchase more copies.
