Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Olga Ross Hannon was born in Moline, Illinois on September 15, 1890. She received her art education at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, the Art Students League of New York City, the New York School of Fine and Applied Art and the Snow-Froelich School of Industrial Art. Hannon taught art at the Sheridan, Wyoming high school prior to joining the faculty at Montana State College in Bozeman in 1921. She served as Head of Applied Art at MSC from 1941-1947. She served as Acting Dean of the Division of Household and Applied Arts in 1944-1945. In addition to her teaching duties she organized Delta Phi Delta, the art honorary at Montana State College and served as a national president for eight years. Mrs. Hannon was Montana representative for the American Artists Professional League. She was editor of the art section of the MEA. Mrs. Hannon was a collector of Indian, Oriental and Mexican arts and crafts and a photographed native peoples throughout Montana and other western states. She spearheaded a project for the preservation of the designs on the painted lodges of the Blackfeet Indians by means of the silk screen process. Hannon died in Wickenburg, Arizona on May 4, 1947.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The Hannon images have been divided into two boxes: photographic prints and 35mm transparencies. The 435 prints in Box 1 are (for the most part) photographs taken by Hannon herself or collected by her and have been individually numbered. These numbered prints have been placed in thirty-nine numbered folders that have broad topical labels. Among these photographs can be found samples of artwork created by Hannon or Native American artists, and a large selection of postcards. Most of the postcards pertain to Indian tribes of the American southwest and have been placed in folders 14 through 39. The 35mm transparencies consist of 270 images that have not been placed in numbered folders. As a result, the slides themselves have been assigned individual image numbers that are prefaced with the word "slide." The titles were taken from notes written on the cardboard slide mountings. These images are primarily of the Blackfeet, Crow, Northern Cheyenne, and Chippewa-Cree people of Montana, with an emphasis on their lodge designs.
