Harold Cedric Bean (1889-1930) was the fourth son of (Judge) Robert Sharp Bean and his wife, Ida Elizabeth Condon Bean. He received his B.A. from the University of Oregon in 1912, and his M.D. from Johns Hopkins in 1916.
He was commissioned in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and sent to France with the British Expeditionary Forces, during WWI. After his discharge, he worked as a practicing physician, serving on the staffs of the Multnomah and Good Samaritan Hospitals, as assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Oregon, and as Chairman of the State Board of Health. He was also one of the founders of the North Pacific Society of Internal Medicine.

The collection (1873-1930) contains correspondence, military papers, manuscripts regarding medical issues among soldiers in WWI, and other papers.
There is one piece of correspondence written by Robert Sharp Bean addressed to "Dear Uncle," and dated July 16, 1873.
The rest of the correspondence is written to and from Harold Bean (1917- 1918), including a letter from his father, Robert Sharp Bean, and letters from George Chamberlain of the US Senate regarding Bean's illness and his subsequent discharge from the Army.
There are two manuscripts regarding medical issues encountered by soldiers during the war: one is a handwritten manuscript describing the conditions "over there," during Bean's service in the Medical Officers Reserve Corps during WWI, and the second is a typed manuscript titled, "Medical Problems in the British Front Areas."
The collection also contains Bean's discharge notice, and a handwritten list of dates and places where Bean served during WWI, from July 24, 1917 - January 25, 1918.
Also available in the collection are army invoices and vouchers regarding medical supplies, and also Bean's orders to report for duty from the US Army.
Among the papers is a resolution passed upon the death of Harold Bean, which includes a short biography, written by the North Pacific Society of Internal Medicine, September 13, 1930, and also sympathy letters from other medical societies, boards, as well as photocopies of obituaries.
There are also six pages of photocopied photographs with notations. Photographs are of the Bean family, Ina Condon Bean, Robert and Ina Bean's beach cottage at Cannon Beach and their home in Portland, and a portrait of Harold Bean. These photocopies are of pages in a scrapbook, and the scrapbook is not a part of the collection.
