Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The Historic Oregon Nautical Charts consist of superseded navigational maps for the Pacific Coast from California to Washington, navigable rivers and bays on the Oregon Coast, and the Columbia and Willamette Rivers. The collection includes charts for Coos, Tillamook, and Yaquina Bays and the Coquille, Nehalem, Siuslaw, Umpqua, and Yaquina Rivers. The charts vary in scale from 1:10,000 to 1:1,000,000, with the maps of the Oregon coastal rivers and bays and the Columbia and Willamette Rivers providing the most detail.

In addition to depth soundings of the open ocean, the charts depict lights, buoys, and radio beacons along the coast; topography of lands near the coast or waterways; and jetties, rock formations, and reefs. The charts include some roads and other features along the coastline.

Arrangement

The Historic Oregon Nautical Charts are arranged in 3 series: I. Pacific Coast, 1888-2007; II. Approaches, Bays, and Rivers on the Oregon Coast, 1868-2005; and III. Columbia and Willamette Rivers, 1884-2009. Within each series, the charts are arranged numerically.

Custodial History

Most of the charts were received for the Oregon State University Libraries' maps collection as federal depository items. Superseded sheets for Oregon were transferred to the Libraries' Historic Maps Collection. Several of the early sheets were received by the Oregon State University Library in the 1960s-1970s.

Acquisition Information

All the charts were transferred from the Oregon State University Libraries Historic Maps Collection to the Special Collections & Archives Research Center in 2013.

Future Additions

Additions to the collection are expected.

Related Materials

Nautical charts of the 1850s-1860s are available in the Reconnaissance of the Western Coast of the United States Nautical Charts (MAPS WestCoast). Detailed maps of the Columbia and Willamette Rivers are included in the Planimetric Maps of Oregon and Washington (MAPS Planimetric).
