Biographical NoteReturn to Top

John N. DeHaas was born July 3, 1926 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He married Bernice Wallace in 1950 and had two children. He received his Bachelor of Architecture from Texas A and M University in 1948. In 1948 he received his Master of Education from Texas A and M University in 1950. DeHaas was appointed to the School of Architecture at Montana State University in 1951. He was Instructor of Architecture from 1951 to 1954, Assistant Professor of Architecture from 1954-1960, Associate Professor of Architecture from 1960-1968, Professor of Architecture from 1968-1980. He was awarded the rank of Professor Emeritus in Architecture circa 1980.

DeHaas served as a member of the State Historic Preservation Advisory Board, the Gallatin County Historic Preservation Board, the American Institute of Architects Historic Resources Committee, and co-founded the Montana Ghost Town Preservation Society. he was author of Montana's Historic Structures, volume 1, 1964, volume 2, 1969; Footlights and Fire Engines, October 1967; Central Montana Ghost Towns, 1975; Ghost Towns of Montana, 1970; and Historic Uptown Butte, 1977. Mr. DeHaas died April 7, 2011.

Acquisition Information

The initial donation of architectural drawing sets establishing the John N. DeHaas papers was gifted in 2004 by John and Bernice DeHaas. Additional documents, photographs, transparencies, and architectural drawings were provided in 2013 by Jocelyn H. DeHaas. This collection incorporated material formerly accessioned as collection number 2141.

Of interest in box 2 a draft of Ghost Towns, Historic Sites and Mining Camps of Montana can be found in folder 45. A draft of Footlights and Fire Engines is located in box 3 folder 28. A comprehensive report of the Helena, Montana Last Chance Gulch urban renewal project has been placed at the end of this series.

136 architectural drawings created or collected by DeHaas. The majority of the drawings represent work done in Montana including residential and commercial plans, remodels and restoration, diagrams, and town site maps. Some DeHaas drawing sets were donated to MSU as portions of different architectural collection accessions and have not been included with the sets described in this series. Drawing sets 71, 81, and 84 have specification booklets that are located in Box 7, these sets are denoted with an asterisk (*).
