In the fall of 1972, The University of Montana non-academic staff elected an ad hoc committee of eight members to prepare a constitution and bylaws for an organization to represent non-academic personnel. The staff ratified the constitution and established the Staff Senate in 1974. The first Staff Senate had 16 members representing approximately 600 non-academic employees; in 2005 there were 30 members. The Staff Senate represents non-academic staff at the university and the College of Technology and serves as a liaison to the university administration and the community. Each senator represents employees from one of the five following employment classifications: professional, technical, clerical, crafts and service. Senators also represent the staff on various university and Staff Senate committees.

This collection consists of records created by The University of Montana’s Staff Senate including general files and special projects, meeting minutes and agendas, correspondence, committees, and financial records. This collection has been divided into five series. Series I, General Records and Special Projects, contains membership records, constituency lists, newsletters, newspaper clippings, and surveys conducted by the Staff Senate. These records date from 1974-2013. Series II, Meeting Minutes and Agendas, contains Staff Senate meeting minutes and agendas from 1974-1994. Series III, Correspondence, contains correspondence regarding Staff Senate and committees’ activities from 1972-1994. Series IV, Committees, contains records from various committees on which Staff Senate members served from 1946-2008. The Schedule B and Student Employment Advisory committee and the Temporary Classification committee both predate the Staff Senate and were earlier forms of representation for non-academic staff. Series V, Financial Records, contains budgets, receipts and expense records from 1974-2000.
