- Robert E. Jones was a longtime resident of Missoula, Montana and served as president of the Missoula Chamber of Commerce. He was active in the public campaign to build three new bridges over the Clark Fork River, influencing the growth of Missoula. This collection contains general information, correspondence, committee materials, newspaper clippings, and photographs related to the Missoula County Citizens Bridge Committee, Phi Sigma Kappa, and the Missoula Brewing Company.

Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Robert E. Jones was born in 1912 near Rattlesnake Creek in Missoula, Montana, and resided there until his death in 1998 at the age of 86. Jones attended the University of Montana--Missoula and graduated in 1934. During his college years, Jones joined the Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity and continued his involvement in the organization for many decades. Later, Jones was involved in issues related to Missoula’s growth. He was a notable leader and consultant in the construction and support of the Hoerner Waldorf pulp mill, a new Legion Hall, and St. Patrick Hospital. However, his most substantial commitment to Missoula was his initiative in the Missoula County Citizens Bridge Committee, a 1950s organization intent on building three new bridges over the Clark Fork River.

The collection contains general information, correspondence, newspaper clippings related to Robert E. Jones’ involvement in the Missoula County Citizens Bridge Committee and Phi Sigma Kappa. There is also a series containing photographs of early Missoula, and fraternities Delta Sigma and Phi Sigma Kappa.
There is a small amount of material from the Missoula Brewing Company in the collection. Jones may have had this because his father, George Jones, came to Missoula in the late 1800s and worked at the Missoula Brewing Company from 1904 until prohibition halted its operations in 1919. Jones' father-in-law, William Steinbrenner, was from a long line of owners of the Missoula Brewing Company and was president and general manager of the company.

Robert Jones created and maintained these materials. Upon his death in 1998 his wife, Florence, donated the materials to the Archives.

Received from Florence Jones in July of 1998.
Related Materials
The K. Ross Toole Archives holds two oral history interviews with Robert E. Jones (OH 131) which provide an account of the Depression years in Missoula, Montana.
