Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Born in 1902, Wallace Scott got his B.A. from Montana State University (now the University of Montana), in 1936 and his M.A. from the same institution. The title of Scott's master's thesis was "The Custer Trail From Fort Abraham Lincoln to Powder River." At some point in his career Wallace Scott worked as a teacher in Dawson County, Montana.

This collection includes two notebooks. The first contains a wide variety of research notes including typed submissions to the Glendive Independent newspaper on subjects such as stockmen's news, community news like club meetings and the arrivals and departures of residents and visitors, taxpayer's lists, letters to the editor school news, county commissioner's meetings, court proceedings, elections, weddings, and ad copy. The second notebook begins with a section containing similar materials but also includes other types of research on early Montana cattle rancher Pierre Wibaux, drafts of papers on Wibaux and a stagecoach line, copies of other papers apparently used as research including one entitled "Wibaux County Montana" by Eva McClean. Finally, this collection includes an original handwritten manuscript, "Pierre Wibaux by S. O. Armstrong Who Knew Him Well."

Donor of Wallace Scott notebooks is unknown. Original manuscript of "Pierre Wibaux, by C.O. Armstrong, Who Knew Him Well, April 15, 1937," gift of Donald Walsh, 2000.

Processing Note

The actions of the original processors are unknown. In 2000, the collection was reprocessed.

This series contains extensive typewritten notes drawn from the Glendive Independent which were apparently used as research for various papers. Additionally, this series contains other types of research on Pierre Wibaux as well as papers on different topics which were probably written by other graduate students or faculty. This series is maintained in its original order.

This series contains an original handwritten manuscript about Pierre Wibaux which was written by S. O. Armstrong who worked for Wibaux for an extended period of time. This manuscript was donated much later than the materials in Series I but is the original of copy of a typed version in Series I.
