Brian Garfield (1939- ) is an author and screenwriter of suspense, mystery, and western stories, and historical non-fiction. Many of his novels have been made into movies, including the cult hit Death Wish and its sequels. Garfield was born in New York City and educated at the University of Arizona. He has written under multiple pseudonyms: Bennett Garland, Alex Hawk, John Ives, Drew Mallory, Frank O'Brian, Jonas Ward, Brian Wynne, Frank Wynne, and Brian Wynne Garfield.
The collection contains manuscripts, screenplays and scripts, correspondence, reviews, articles, master's thesis, published books, magazines, and articles, and unpublished research and diaries. Most of the manuscripts and screenplays come with a letter of explanation by the author.
The initial donation of 1966 through to the addendum of 1978 consists of the first 32 boxes of the collection (one box, #32, is missing). Accessions that came in from 1991-2000 are in boxes 34-66.
The initial donation of 1966 contains manuscripts organized by title that include drafts, galley proofs, corrected sheets, printer's copy, outlines, discarded pages, and final drafts, 1961-1966. When applicable, the alias used is noted.
The 1967 addendum contains manuscripts, articles, reviews and correspondence with agent, Toni Strassman (1958-1967). Manuscripts contain letters of explanation by the author.
The August 1968 addendum contains manuscripts of books, plays, short stories, articles for The Roundup (the magazine of the Western Writers of America, Inc.), and correspondence with Douglas Martin.
The October 1968 addendum contains manuscript material from 1961-1968, Garfield's master’s thesis, and books by others.
The November 1969 addendum contains working material for the book, Thousand-Mile War: World War II in Alaska and the Aleutians. Material includes multiple drafts, corrections, editor's edit, final draft, printer copy, galley proofs, and research material such as publications, maps, and photocopied formerly classified and other unpublished documents. There are also four boxes of research note cards with a corresponding letter explaining the system of documentation. Also available are cassette recordings of interviews (1967), alphabetically arranged correspondence, photograph lists and captions, and published works.
The 1971 addendum (a continuation of the 1966 gift) contains correspondence including incoming (1966-1968) and outgoing (1964-1970) book length manuscripts that contain research material, notes, outlines, synopsis, early and final drafts, revisions, editorial notes, published copies and foreign editions. Also available are paintings by Garfield's mother.
The 1972 addendum (a continuation of the 1966 gift) contains book length manuscripts, 1970-1972.
The 1973 addendum contains published works by Garfield.
The 1975 addendum contains outgoing correspondence (1971-1973), incoming correspondence (1971-1975), manuscripts of Death Sentence and Death Wish, 1970-1975 that include uncorrected proofs and published versions, and also include a letter of explanation by the author.
The 1976 addendum contains outgoing correspondence (1965-1972), incoming correspondence organized alphabetically by last name or title that is primarily concerned with the publication of The Thousand Mile War, book-length manuscripts, screenplays (including "Death Wish"), radio scripts, works edited by Garfield, and miscellaneous incomplete projects. This addendum also includes a publication record (up till 1975), issues of The Round Up, 1963-1974, screenplays by others of Garfield's novels and manuscripts by others.
The 1978 addendum contains manuscripts (1975-1978) including Death Sentence, and manuscripts by others.
Accessions 91.51.M and 91.50.M are filed under the number Up 702 and consist of correspondence (1965-1988), screen, television, and film script material for manuscripts including The Thousand Mile War, Wild Times, Seersucker, Tripwire, The Paladin, The Stepfather, and Checkpoint Charlie. Also included here are essays, articles, short stories, columns, book reviews, and red and black 'record' notebooks containing holograph versions of stories, other typescripts, and book reviews.
The 1994 accession (Up 112) contains manuscript material of the novel, Smoke.
Accession 000.067 contains manuscript material for screenplays including Recoil. Also available are videos of the Aleutian Islands, of renaming Shemya island, and of Black Jackson: Last Mission, audio tapes, photographs, and letters of Reineke, loose-leaf copies of The First Paramushiro Raids, and The Thousand Mile War, Alaska and Aleutians articles, and personal letters to Garfield.
Accession 00.073 / Up 722 contains manuscripts material and outtakes from Western Films: a Complete Guide, Do or Die, Marchand Woman, and Manifest Destiny.
Accession 99.029 / Up 113 contains manuscript material of Do or Die and Fight or Flight as well as screenplays of Marksmen and Hell's Hinges.
