- Ashley Robert (Bob) Russell (1922-1944) was killed by a German sniper in Normandy, France, July 15, 1944, and had been one of the first to land in France on D-Day. Papers include correspondence, 1944, to his relatives, from France, regarding military life; correspondence, 1940-1941, from the Portland Art Museum regarding enrollment and sale of his artworks; a letter, 1942, from Sgt. Alfred E. Peacock regarding Russell's artwork; and a typescript letter, 1948, to Russell's parents, posthumously awarding him a Purple Heart.
