Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Andrew Laszlo was a Hungarian-American cinematographer. He was born in Papa, Hungary on January 12, 1926 where he attended local school and excelled in swimming, fencing, and skating. He also developed an interest in photography at this time. During World War II he was sent to a labor camp by the Nazis and eventually the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. Following his liberation he continued to live in Hungary until 1947 when he was able to emigrate to the United States. While serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, Laszlo learned motion picture filming in the Signal Corps. This led to his employment as a television camera operator on the Phil Silvers Show and the Ed Sullivan Show. His career as a Hollywood cinematographer began in earnest afterwards, and his credits in film and television included: The Owl and the Pussycat (1970); The Warriors (1979) Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989) and Ghost Dad (1989). In 1969, Laszlo was admitted to the Cinematographer’s Branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), and he participated in the balloting of film award nominations thereafter. When he retired from active film work he lectured students in film making as an adjunct professor at Montana State University, pursued his fly fishing hobby, and published several works of fiction. He died in Bozeman, Montana on October 7, 2011.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The Andrew Laszlo collection of motion picture memorabilia includes scripts from Hollywood productions going back as far as the 1960s, including one he wrote himself, Go Jump in the Pool. The scripts were apparently collected because he either worked or considered working on the named film, or they were submitted for his judgement in voting for the Best Screenplay award during the annual AMPAS Oscars ceremony. In the following listing, any scripts that represent movies Laszlo worked on have been indicated with an asterisk. An extensive collection of musical scores for various Academy Award nominees have also been preserved. One box of documents in this collection pertain to the production of Ghost Dad, a film directed by Sidney Poitier and starring Bill Cosby in 1990 and include memorandums, shooting schedules, storyboard sheets, and other materials. This is the only film that Laszlo worked on for which significant documentation was saved. A single folder of correspondence, which includes two autographed letters from actor Gregory Peck welcoming Laszlo to the AMPAS is part of the collection. Other memorabilia related to the AMPAS includes invitations to the annual award ceremony, ballots, rule brochures, and event schedules.
