Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Maurice Edward Crumpacker (1886-1927) was an attorney in Portland, Oregon, from 1912-1924. He co-authored the Oregon Bonus Law. During World War I, he served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army Signal Corps and oversaw the Loyal Legion of Loggers and Lumbermen, a company union established during World War I "as a means of harmonizing employers and employees in attaining efficient lumber production and combating the spread of IWW [Industrial Workers of the World] doctrines." He represented Oregon as a Republican member of the U.S. Congress from 1925 to 1927.

The collection contains materials relating to the Loyal Legion of Loggers and Lumbermen, including correspondence and notices (1917-1920); membership lists (1918); convention minutes (1918); rules (1918); and a scrapbook (1918-1922). Also included is the August 1918 issue of the Monthly Bulletin of the Loyal Legion of Loggers and Lumbermen (Volume 1, No. 6); the September 10, 1918, issue of Lumber World Review (Volume XXXV, No. 5); and a June 1, 1918, booklet titled "Camp Sanitation Survey (With Recommendations)" written for the lumber industry of the Pacific Northwest by the Headquarters of the Spruce Production Division, Loyal Legion Loggers and Lumbermen. Also included is a roster from the Portland chapter of the American Legion, 1920.
