Historical Note

KRTV began broadcasting television in the Great Falls, Montana, area on June 27, 1958. That same day, high winds destroyed its broadcasting antenna, and the station was off the air until October 5, 1958. KRTV was the first local television station to broadcast live from the Montana State Fair in 1960. In 1960, it began broadcasting in color.

As a CBS affiliate and member of the Montana Television Network, KRTV continues to deliver local, regional, and national programming for central and northern Montana.

Content Description

This collection contains audio-visual materials and a sequence of artifacts created or collected by the KRTV production studios in Great Falls, Montana. Audio-visual materials include 16 mm motion picture films, 2 inch, 3/4 inch, and 1/2 inch video materials, as well as one audio only reel. Artifacts include on-camera signboards and CBS Evening News cue slides. Collection materials provide insights into both trends and isolated news stories for Great Falls and across Montana during the collection period, developments in visual-media production within a rural state, and major station advertisers from north central Montana during the late 1960s through the early 1980s. Recurrent news story subjects include Malmstrom Air Force base, Air Force maneuvers and troop assignments in the Great Falls area, the Charles M. Russell Museum, Great Falls School Board decisions, Paris Gibson Park events, area high school and College of Great Falls sports events, elections and voting procedures, Montana Power Company developments, prominent building constructions and demolitions across north central Montana, Republican and Democratic Party rallies, American Indian (particularly High Plains Indian) events and historical retrospectives, the Montana Centennial Celebration, and celebrity visits to north central Montana.

Administrative Information

Arrangement :

The collection is arranged in two series:

Series I: Moving Images and Audio

Series II: Artifacts

The materials are numbered three different ways that reflect prior and new processing. Since the former collections were numbered in four different sequences (Film 14, Film 22, Video 10, and Video 15), those retain their original numbering (F14, F22, V10, or V15). Newly processed materials received new numbers. The materials are otherwise arranged in no particular order.

Custodial History :

The materials remained in possession of KRTV until time of donation.

Acquisition Information :

Gift of KRTV, 1992, 1994 and 1997.

Processing Note :

This collection was originally processed in four parts (two film collections, Film 14 and Film 22 and two video collections, Video 10 and Video 15), all of which were numbered separately; a significant portion of the collection remained unprocessed until 2004. During 2004 reprocessing all materials were integrated into one collection; previously unprocessed and/or unidentified materials were identified, described, and addressed for preservation concerns; and the full collection was extensively re-described.

Detailed Description of the Collection

Series I:  Moving Images and Audio, 1968-1996
120.5 linear feet

This series includes 16 mm motion picture films, 2 inch, 3/4 inch, and 1/2 inch video materials (1/2 inch VHS tapes consist entirely of archival dub transfers from the other formats), as well as one audio only reel containing background music for news productions. Most 16 mm films include magnetic sound tracks. These materials provide insights into both trends and isolated news stories for Great Falls and across Montana during the collection period and the station's visual-media production developments during the late 1960s through the early 1980s. Recurrent news story subjects include Malmstrom Air Force base, Air Force maneuvers and troop assignments in the Great Falls area, the Charles M. Russell Museum, Great Falls School Board decisions, Paris Gibson Park events, area high school and College of Great Falls sports events, elections and voting procedures, Montana Power Company developments, prominent building constructions and demolitions across north central Montana, Republican and Democratic Party rallies, American Indian (particularly High Plains Indian) events and historical retrospectives, the Montana Centennial Celebration, and celebrity visits to north central Montana.

Series II:  Artifacts, 1969-1990
1.5 linear feet

Artifacts include on-camera art cards and 72 photographic slides. Art cards are grouped into the following categories: Advertisements, News/Sports/Weather Reports, General Programming Announcements, Specialty Programming Announcements, Cartoons, and Station Identification. Slides include CBS News programming cues, images of the old and new KRTV studios, portraits of on-air personalities, and images from KXLF (a sister station in Butte, Montana). These materials provide insights into the station's major station advertisers from north central Montana during the late 1960s through the early 1980s and evidence visual-media production changes.
