Arrangement

Comprising five series, the papers of C. B. Harston reflect his activities as a soil and water specialist. The first series documents the Tennessee Valley Authority/Washington State University fertilizer research project (1939-1964), with Dr. Harston's role as the university's Western Washington Extension Agent commencing in 1943. (1) Correspondence, (2) financial records, (3) transportation receipts, (4) participant data, (5) project plans, and (6) reports and records fall naturally into six subseries, while the seventh subseries is a composite of project related papers including materials on the history of the project.

The second series was accumulated during Dr. Harston's chairmanship of the Solid Waste Subcommittee of the Whitman County Planning Council. Dating 1969 through 1974, this series contains research materials, council and committee minutes, correspondence, and proposed standards.

Although a few pieces of correspondence and conference papers are included, most of the third series consists of soil analyses, conservation materials, and slides depicting soil erosion. Correspondence, memoranda, and agendas attesting to Dr. Harston's leadership roles in Resource Management Youth Camps (1967-1973) at Cornet Bay, Washington and at the Cispus Environmental Center (1973-1975) at Randle, Washington make up the fourth series. The fifth series contains published and unpublished materials concerning preservation of Washington's natural resources in addition to detailing Dr. Harston's personal interaction with the Silver Lake (Cowlitz County) Eutrophication Task Force, 1973-1974.

In each series or subseries the folders are arranged chronologically, while within the individual folders the original order of the materials has been retained.

Acquisition Information

The papers of C. B. Harston were deposited in the Washington State University Libraries in May and June 1977 (UA 77-11).
