Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Orson Winso Israelsen was born December 25, 1887 in Hyrum, Utah. During Israelsen's youth he worked on the family farm and attended the local schools in the area. He enrolled in the Brigham Young College in Logan, Utah in 1906 and graduated in 1910. In 1910 he enrolled in the Agricultural College of Utah (now Utah State University) to study irrigation and drainage engineering. After graduation he enrolled in the College of Engineering at the University of California, Berkley in 1912. Two years later he was awarded a M.A. in Irrigation and Drainage Engineering and he began teaching at the Agricultural College of Utah. In 1925 he was awarded a Ph.D. in Irrigation and Drainage Engineering. Israelsen retired from USU in 1954. He died on May 15, 1968 in Logan, Utah.

During the course of Israelsen's career he was highly involved with the UACs agricultural experiment stations and was involved in numerous research projects in Utah, the American West, Canada, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, India, and South America. Israelsen was the author of hundreds of published works and his 1932 book, Irrigation Principles and Practices has become the classic treatise on the subject with a dozen foreign language translations.

For a detailed account of his personal and professional life researchers should see Israelsen's autobiography, Forty Years of Sound and Forty Years of Silence, published in 1968. See Merrill-Cazier Library (HV2534.I8 A3) or Special Collections (920 Is7).

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The Orson Winso Israelsen photograph collection consists of 1495 images that Israelsen used to document his long career as a irrigation engineer and drainage specialist. Included in the collection are images of flooding, laterals, flumes, headgates, culverts, canal and dam construction, water measuring equipment, weirs, erosion, diversions, culverts, reservoirs, and terracing. Most of the photographs were taken in Utah, but many are probably from adjoining states and a few are from Italy, Spain, and Portugal. Boxes 1, 2, and 3 contain organized and clearly labeled photographs from various projects relevant to O.W. Israelsen. Some are self-contained and titled projects, while others are loose despite a clear organization. These have been maintained in the arrangement in which they arrived. Photographs and papers in Folders 1-5 were pulled from the Project 211 addendum in MSS Coll 31. The photographs and papers in folders 6-12 were pulled from a binder labeled "Photographs-Engineering-Irrigation" New photograph numbers are consistent with original photograph numbering. The photographs and papers in folders 13-23 were pulled from a binder labeled "O.W. Israelson Utah Agr. Expo Sta Pro. 157 June 5, 1939." The binder had the Utah State Agricultural College seal. Box 4 contains unorganized an unlabeled images from various unidentified projects and trips relevant to O.W. Israelsen. The original order of the photos has been largely maintained, and the folder or envelope in which the photos arrived is clipped to the mylar sleeve. Most of these contain no information of value, and are included only as a matter of organizational reference. Box 5 contains a photo compilation book entitled "Irrigation Projects of Uzbekistan."

Container(s): Box 2, Folder 23

Container(s) Description Dates
2:23:01: "Photomicrograph of median longitudinal section through a raceme of young aborted alfalfa buds. The breakdown and disintegration of the individual buds is general and uniform over the whole raceme, in contrast to the localized disintegration that follows Lygus damage. (App. 25 times natural size)."

2:23:02a: "Oblique longitudinal section exposing the ovary and showing a puncture that has resulted in a discoloration of the basal one-third of the ovary."
1940-1949
2:23:02b: "Median longitudinal section from the same flower and exposing the ovules and the area of damage within the ovary. The localized nature of the damage is shown. The ovules in the upper one-half of the ovary are apparently free from injury."
1940-1949
2:23:03: "Photomicrograph of a median longitudinal section of an alfalfa flower that has fallen from a raceme from a cause that is not directly attributable to Lygus injury. A shrivelling and deterioration of the ovules is shown, with no apparent damage to the floral envelope or the ovary. The condition is typical of a large percentage of dehiseing alfalfa flowers and may result from a failure of pollination, ineffective fertilization or embryo abortion."
1940-1949
2:23:04: "Stem from a Lygus infested alfalfa plant showing a distorted development and a tendency to excessive branching. Racemes of buds, flowers and seed pods that are apparently normal (fig. 2) developed on short branches soon after the removal of the infestation by frequent dusting."

2:23:05: "Showing type of growth and reproductive development on severly damaged alfalfa plants following the removal of a Lygus infection. Below the line: Retarted and distorted stem development and excessive branching that is typical of the effects of Lygus on early growth and development of alfalfa. (Except 2 branches at the extreme right). Above the line: Growth and development that followed the removal of the infestation. Note the normal elongation of the stem internodes and the development of racemes of buds and flowers on long peduncles, as in the normal condition in alfalfa (fig. 2)."

2:24:02: "A suppressed elongation of the apical internodes of alfalfa stems and the development of racemes of buds in clusters called rosetts. This condition occurs under severe lygus infestation. Compare with normal condition. (Approximately one-half natural size)."
1940-1949
2:24:03a-03b: "Effects of lygus infestation on the early growth and development of alfalfa plants: A. Infested from prebud stage to full-bloom stage of development; B. Uninfested and dusted with Procide, five to seven times weekly for the same period."

2:24:04b: "Showing the growth and reproductive development of lygus-infested alfalfa in comparison with dusted plants. Dusted from five to seven times weekly with Pyrocide for the control of lygus infestation. Note the relatively scanty growth but healthy condition of the plants, which are heavily loaded with seed."
