Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Carl Krueger was born November 5, 1905; he grew up and attended school in Oakfield, Wisconsin. He then attended the University of Minnesota where he graduated with a degree in forestry. After graduation he took a job as a ranger for the Forest Service in Cody, Wyoming. While there he married Dorothy Siddle on May 24, 1933. From August 1943 to July 1949, he was forest supervisor at the Pisgah-Croatan National Forests near Asheville, North Carolina. He next served with the Forest Service in Texas before becoming forest supervisor at the Coeur d'Alene National Forest in August 1952. He retired from this position in October 1965.

He was active in the Presbyterian Church, Rotary, Society of American Foresters, and the Hoo Hoo Club, an association of loggers, lumbermen, and foresters. He also set up and taught in the vocational forestry program at North Idaho College. He served on the board of the Museum of North Idaho where he helped to catalog artifacts that had been collected by the defunct North Idaho Historical Society.

Carl Krueger died in Coeur d'Alene on November 1, 1985.

Arrangement

The diaries were in chronological order when received, but the remaining material was not arranged. These items were sorted into two series, slides and manuscripts and correspondence.

The diaries consist of standardized forest service daily diaries. These are in chronological order.

There are many slides in the collection; all were in slide trays or storage boxes and were identified by Krueger. The file labeled "The Cradle of Forestry in America" contains slides, photographs and brochures on the Pisgah-Croatan National Forest.

The manuscripts and correspondence series includes an article on the Mullan Road written by Krueger, a student paper on the ecology of the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, class notes, and one letter concerning a timber management report from the Forest Service in Wyoming.

Acquisition Information

The papers of Carl Krueger were donated to the University of Idaho Library by his widow, Dorothy Krueger, between March and September 1986.
