Historical NoteReturn to Top

Many of the buildings on the Boise State University campus, especially those constructed while it was still Boise Junior College, were designed by the Boise architectural firm of Hummel, Hummel and Jones. In 1982 the firm (by then known as Hummel, Hummel, Jones and Shawver) allowed their files relating to Boise State University to be photocopied by Special Collections Department in conjunction with the university's Fiftieth Anniversary celebration. These files illustrate working relationships between the firm and the university and include correspondence, specifications, estimates, contracts, construction budgets, materials lists, and other papers. Except for a few sketches, no architectural drawings or plans are present. In 1940, the school and the firm remodeled the old Boise airport hangar into a gymnasium. Hummel, Hummel, and Jones designed the early residence halls, the original student union, the assembly building, the heating plant, and other buildings in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. These changes are also documented in the files. The latest changes recorded in these files are upgrades to the old Science Building in 1979.
