- Joseph Henry Brown (1867-1898) was an Oregon pioneer, newspaper printer and correspondent, a Veteran, and a historian who wrote about politics, and especially Native American culture and conflicts in Oregon. The collection contains a letter dated April 27, 1895 from Brown to Nettie Spencer regarding his and other's writings on the history of provisional government in Oregon.

Joseph Henry Brown was born near Wilmington, Will County, Illinois, in 1837, and came overland to Oregon with his parents in 1847.
He served as an apprentice with the Oregon Statesman newspaper in Salem in the late 1850s. He joined the First Oregon Cavalry in 1861 and saw action in conflicts with Native Americans in eastern Oregon. He served as a clerk in the state legislature, and was employed as the Salem correspondent for the Oregonian newspaper.
In 1869 he married Margaret R. Graves, with whom he had four children, and around 1880 they moved to Portland.
Brown wrote monographs of histories of Oregon, and of "Indian wars in Oregon." The first volume of Political History of Oregon to 1848, was published in 1892, but subsequent volumes (1949-1860) remained unpublished due to Brown's ill health.

In the letter, Brown claims he and W. H. Gray are the main two authorities on the history of the provisional government in Oregon. Brown states that he found a great deal of information on Oregon's early history while researching papers left by former Governor Abernethy, the first Governor of the provisional government of Oregon.
