Historical NoteReturn to Top

Founded in the early 1920s, the sophomore men's and women's honorary service organization at The University of Montana-Missoula (then State University at Missoula) was orginally a women's only organizaiton that was first called Tanan. After joining the national organization in 1931, it was known as the Tanan chapter of Spur. Commonly called Tanan of Spurs and sometimes just the Spurs, this group was the female counterpart of the Bear Paws, sophomore men's honorary service organization. The Spurs' original activities included ushering for football and basketball games, managing the annual Interscholastic Meet, discouraging students from straying off campus sidewalks and creating new pathways through lawns, encouraging participation in the annual campus cleanup known as Aber Day, and participating in Homecoming events. Sometime in the 1970s the Bear Paws and Spurs combined to become the Spurs with male and female student members.

By 1992 the Spurs’ activities included ushering for volleyball games; Homecoming events like designing a parade float and Singing on the Steps; fund-raising through selling bed-time stories, bake sales, and a book fair; a Red Cross blood drive; a Christmas party; and a clothing drive for the Poverello Center in Missoula.

The organization disbanded around 2003.
